Empowering the Next Generation of Pharma Innovators
June 22, 2026
For decades, we have taken great pride in India’s title as the ‘Pharmacy of the World.’ Our ability to make large amounts of generic medicines has saved countless lives globally. But as I walk the halls of our institute and speak with our bright students, I know your potential goes far beyond copying what already exists. You are hungry to discover, to invent, and to lead.
The global pharmaceutical world is changing. Complex new drugs and biologics now make up over 40 percent of global pharmaceutical sales. Because of this, our national strategy is shifting from making basic generic drugs in large numbers to creating high-value, innovative medicines. For our youth, this is more than just a change in government policy. It is an open door to your future.
Here is how these changes are reshaping pharmacy careers and how we are preparing you for them –
The Push for Innovation
The government announced a major new program called Mission Biopharma Manufacturing SHAKTI. This program will help make India a global center for new drug discovery over the next ten years. For our students, this means your career choices are growing quickly.
Programs like the Promotion of Research and Innovation in Pharma MedTech Sector and BioNEST are made to connect schools with the industry. As teachers, our job is to help you succeed in this new environment. We must update our classrooms and labs to focus on:
- Advanced Medicines: We need to move beyond basic chemistry so you can learn about complex new treatments.
- Research Mindset: We want to build a culture of curiosity. We want you to see yourselves as scientists and inventors, not just process managers.
Building Local Strength
In the past, we relied heavily on imported materials to make important items like antibiotics and vaccines. The current goal is to build our own facilities and improve technology sharing. This is creating a huge need for local experts.
India is also expanding its clinical research field. The country plans to set up 1,000 approved clinical trial sites. This change requires a huge number of skilled researchers. This is exactly where you step in. The students we train today will be the researchers, safety experts, and quality leaders who build global trust in Indian medicines tomorrow.
To the students and young professionals reading this: the industry is growing, and we are growing with it. We hear your desire to work at the cutting edge of science.
To make sure our talent is ready to lead, pharmacy institutes must focus on:
- Real Industry Training: We will match what you learn in class with real-world programs that support local manufacturing.
- Updating Skills: We will train you not just in science, but also in digital tools and global quality standards.
- Working Together: We will create spaces where schools and companies work together to give you hands-on research experience.
The mix of new technology and market growth offers a rare chance for the pharmaceutical sector. We are no longer just preparing you to enter the workforce. We are giving you the tools to change it. The shift from generic drugs to new, innovative medicines depends entirely on the skills and smarts of our young talent. You are the future of Indian healthcare, and we are here to help you build it.
